The scrapping of MATSONIA (see https://www.linerlytica.com/cms/oldest-containership-sent-for-scrap/ [/cms/oldest-containership-sent-for-scrap/]) brings the total number of containerships deleted in 2021 to 26 ships for 19,676 teu. This is the lowest level of containership scrapping since 2005 when just 12 ships for 4,910 teu were deleted. The vessel deletions are well down from the peak of 223 ships for 696,552 teu recorded in 2016 which marked the worst year for the container shipping market.
