COSCO has confirmed a new order for 12 new methanol-dual fuel ships of 24,000 teu to be built at 2 of its 50% owned shipyards – Nantong COSCO KHI and Dalian COSCO KHI. Van Son Shipping has reactivated the 1,730 teu VINASHIN EXPRESS 01 on 9 October 2022 and placed the ship on its Haiphong-Cai Mep domestic service. Active Capacity Set To Increase

The easing port congestion and a pick up in the number of new ships being delivered has brough the active fleet back above 17m teu for the first time in 12 months. More ships have also entered drydock including ships undergoing scrubber retrofits. Further increases are forthcoming, with new deliveries picking up pace while port congestion continues to ease over the coming 3 months. Charter Rates Eased Further

Charter rates have continued to ease on the back of lower transaction volumes, with current activity mainly focused on smaller vessel sizes on shorter periods. Rates will continue to weaken in the coming weeks with the summer peak season turning out to be much weaker than expected. The inactive fleet remains largely unchanged at 24 ships for 74,395 teu as at 24 July 2022,which is a historical low level for our data series dating back to 2008. 13 ships for 26,367 teu are idle or awaiting     phase in.  4 ships for 13,981 teu are Iranian owned ships.
